In the beginning, Mooresville was mainly a weekend getaway for Statesville and Winston-Salem, NC, residents. “Weekenders” put mobile homes on their waterfront lake property or built rustic shelters, just enough for an overnight stay. Others had boats in wet slips in marinas and would stay on them. In the early days, owners were more worried about piers, docks, boat houses, and ramps.
Beginning in the late 1990’s those weekend homes were either torn down by families and new homes were built, or local builders were gobbling up the property and building lakeside mansions. Some families built homes for retirement.

He also offered to sell land to parties interested in building a town. With the upsurge in the cotton trade, the Mooresville economy quickly expanded to include textiles.
